Secession will require statesmanship, which is a marked deviation away from politics.
by Russell D. Longcore
I hate politics. Politics are defined by compromise. Compromise in and of itself is not a dirty word or reprehensible act. It is the form of compromise that becomes dirty or reprehensible.
There are countless issues for which compromise is the best solution to gain agreement and settlement between parties. In the insurance claims business, nearly everything is negotiable and most insurance settlements are a product of compromise. The same goes for issues at law in the courts. Even in the criminal courts there are daily compromises, and the court dockets would be clogged for years without compromises on charges and penalties. Much of marriage is compromise, as we all do what we can to get along with our spouses.
But compromise turns ugly when core values are forsaken in the arena of political gamesmanship. (That last statement assumes that there ARE core values present in the first place.) I submit to you that most of the politicians that populate state legislatures and Congress possess only the core values of self-interest. If you would argue with my submission, kindly point me to specific examples of individual legislators, higher office-holders or judges who have not violated state constitutions or the US Constitution with their actions. The core values of self-interest have no foundation in any higher law, but are the bastard offspring of expediency.
The proper core values of which I speak are truth, justice, liberty and individual property rights. They are the core values Thomas Jefferson enumerated when he wrote the Declaration of Independence. They are the values that cause government to be “instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…” These values stand in stark contrast to the core values of self-interest…men described by theologian C.S. Lewis in his book The Abolition of Man as “men without chests.”
When the Founders crafted the US Constitution, there were a great many compromises that were made. Remember that the issue of slavery could have been settled back then, but many states (not only Southern states) made slavery a deal-breaker. So, those early compromises are arguably why the US is in the shape it is presently in. The Articles of Confederation protected the sovereignty of the several states, which were actually independent nations. The Constitution is the overthrow of the sovereignty of the states that defeated Great Britain in war, and the establishment of a powerful central government that has morphed into a leviathan with a death wish.
Today’s politician goes along to get along. Compromise is the lingua franca of the politician…the very air they breathe. Most politicians were baptized in the waters of compromise simply to attain their elected office when they adopted a party platform. And each day after that, they have knelt in obeisance to partake in the communion…the wafer of waffling and the cup of craven concession.
Secession will require leadership rather than compromise. There is nothing about secession that suggests compromise. Secession is an iron stake pounded into frozen ground. It seeks no accommodation…it asks no permission. Secession is a divorce, not marital counseling. Secession is the death of one relationship and the birth of a new relationship between the citizens of a seceding state and their new local national government.
Gone are the Federal entanglements, the Federal debt, the Federal regulations. The days are ended when Washington controls all human action 24/7/365. No more monstrous Fed taxation, IRS, EPA, OSHA, FDA, Homeland Security, FBI. No more Federal court rulings that abrogate the rights of that state to govern how it chooses. No more Federal Reserve counterfeiting money. No more foreign wars soaking up tax dollars for nothing and no more soldiers dying for big business.
Think about your personal situation in 2011. Think about how desperately ill the American economy is today, and how the prognosis is terminal. Then consider how ALL that bad news goes away when a US state secedes to become its own sovereign nation.
What thinking person would not be wooed and won by the suitor named Secession?
Secession is the Hope For Mankind. Who will be first?
